A virtuoso display from captain Ciarán Mac Giolla Choinnigh led Scoil Chaitríona to the Dublin Schools Junior C Hurling title at O'Toole Park last Thursday.

On a fine day for hurling, midfield maestro Mac Giolla Choinnigh scored 1-14 as his side held off a spirited effort from Coolmine who pushed them all the way.

Fiontán Mac Gibb contributed two goals to the Mobhi Road Gaelscoil's cause, while full-back Pól Ó Griabháin played an influential role with some stirring runs from defence and an ability to find star man Mac Giolla Choinnigh from puck-outs that caused the Coolmine defence a host of problems.

Coolmine looked at times the more balanced side with an all-round threat, but their inability to prevent Mac Giolla Choinnigh gaining scoring opportunities within his wide range was to their detriment.

Any free within the Coolmine half was fair game for the highly skilled Castleknock native Mac Giolla Choinnigh, who himself attended primary school in Coolmine.

The defeated side departed Crumlin with their heads held high after an excellent effort from centre half-back Dara Doyle in particular.

He scored 0-7 and was excellent in general play, while Liam Quinn struck for two goals.

However, Mac Giolla Choinnigh set the tempo from the off with a point directly from the throw-in, before he gave warning of his free-taking range with two long-distance frees that sailed over the bar with ease.

But Doyle got Coolmine off the mark before Dylan Sweeney set Quinn up for his first to put his side a point ahead.

Mac Giolla Choinnigh equalised but almost immediately Karl Rogers had Coolmine back in front with a superb point on the turn. Then Gary Foy made a fine run, gave the ball to captain Joe Fitzmaurice whose shot dropped short to Sweeney who kicked the ball home to make the scores 2-2 to 0-4 after 11 minutes.

If Scoil Chaitríona were rattled then they weren't showing it as that man Mac Giolla Choinnigh exchanged frees with Doyle before scoring 1-4 without reply before half time.

He picked the sliotar up in his own half, ghosted by three would-be tacklers and calmly stroked the ball over from 45 metres, before picking up a loose ball and decisively finishing beyond Kieran Cahill in the Coolmine goal.

Leading 1-9 to 2-3 at the break, Scoil Chaitríona were able to keep Coolmine at arm's length for much of the second half.

A sweeping move that ran the length of the pitch led to Ciaran de Grae feeding the ball to Fiontán Mac Gibb who finished well to put seven points between the sides.

But back Coolmine came again as Daly stuck two frees over before Ciaran Gaule's back-post ball was picked up by Quinn who made no mistake for his second goal.

Again, whenever Coolmine got close Scoil Chaitríona were able to pull away and Seán O Rian pointed before Mac Gibb grabbed his second from a Cillian Ó hEighnigh pass.

Sweeney turned a low Daly free into the net at the other end as Coolmine never gave up, but a Mac Giolla Choinnigh run and point capped off a fine day for the youngster, who lifted the trophy for his school.
