Saints in the dark over Damien deal

LIAM Buckley says he's unsure if his bid to bring Damien Duff (above) to St Patrick's Athletic will be a success.

Duff, 36, has stated his desire to finish his career in the League of Ireland and he's expected to agree a deal with Shamrock Rovers. But Duff has also held talks with St Pats and while the Saints boss says the door to Richmond Park is not closed on Duff, he's in the dark over what the former international plans to do next.

"I have spoken to Damien. He has had a fantastic career and he would be a great addition to the league from a profile point of view, I am not sure where he will end up at this point in time," Buckley said.

"I think he is looking forward to playing. I encouraged him, bearing in mind that when I was at Pats I won the league aged 35/36. If I can do it anyone can do it.

"He is coming back from injury, please God he gets himself fit as he would be a great addition to the league.

"Where he will end up, I don't know. I don't plan to meet him again.

"He still has his options open as he hasn't committed to anyone. When he will make up his mind, I don't know," added the Saints boss.

It's thought that Duff is close to agreeing a contract with Rovers but the former Chelsea man will not be fit for another month as he recovers from the ankle injury which ended his season in Australia prematurely.
