Dan Carter believes Sonny Bill Williams will bring a bit of the X-Factor to Canterbury and the Crusaders after his decision to head to Christchurch to play his rugby.

Earlier this month, the former rugby league star turned his back on a multi-million dollar deal with Toulon to sign with the New Zealand Rugby Union.

Today's announcement that he will join Canterbury for the ITM Cup and the Crusaders for next year's Super 15 has been welcomed by All Blacks fly-half Carter.

"It's fantastic news. He's a real athlete. Although I haven't had a chance to see a lot of him playing rugby union, from what I've heard he's a real prospect," Carter said.

The All Blacks are sweating on the fitness of fly-half Carter ahead of Saturday's second Test with Wales and so have drafted in Blues utility back Luke McAlister as cover.
