Uncertainty over Horgan's future
LEINSTER coach Joe Schmidt has admitted that there is no guarantee Shane Horgan will play again for Leinster, writes Des Berry.
Horgan has had to endure a second operation on a seriously damaged knee that did not responded as well as he had hoped to a long, arduous rehabilitation from the first operation at the back end of last season.
"It's always something they have to consider when they come back from long-term injuries. Is there enough time left for them to really get back into the game?" said Schmidt.
At best, Horgan is an outside bet to be ready to make a contribution to the tail of Leinster's season. At worst, his career could be coming to an end.
"It's getting tight for time to be honest. For Shane, we'd hope for some improvement in the next four to six weeks really. Otherwise, with the amount of time out of the game, we would be starting to get too tight," added Schmidt.
"I suppose the longer it goes the tougher that will be for Shane, but, as far as mentally being very mature and very, very tough, Shane will make those decisions once he's decided it's just not possible to get back - if that's what happens in the next six to eight weeks."
