Sean O'Brien's immediate playing future has been thrown into doubt by the news that he will see a specialist on Friday.

While the Ireland flanker (above) is recovering well from an arthroscopic procedure to remove floating matter from his ankle, a Leinster statement has revealed how a shoulder problem "has come to light".

It is not known whether the shoulder problem is related to the surgery he underwent at the start of the year after which he suffered the complication of infection.

In the short-term, this would appear to rule out any prospect of O'Brien playing for Leinster in the first two rounds of the Rugby Champions Cup, starting in mid-October.

Meanwhile, Leinster signing Ben Te'o is expected to land in Dublin next Tuesday after the conclusion of the National Rugby League Grand final in which his club South Sydney look to win for the first time in 43 years.
