Leinster Senior Cup Semi-Final replay: Roscrea on the brink
– 12 March 2015 03:00 AM
Cistercian Roscrea will bid to win the Leinster Senior Cup for the first time in their history against Belvedere at The RDS on St Patrick's Day.
They have been to three finals, losing out in a replay in 1941 to the same Newbridge they beat in this replay, a real thriller by any measure.
The other two down days have been more recent, finding Blackrock too strong (17-9) in 1999 when Wexford gaelic footballer Redmond Barry kicked their three penalties and Clongowes simply irresistible (46-15) in 2011.
They were big underdogs on both occasions. This will not be the case next Tuesday in what will be a 50-50 contest.
Coach Pieter Swanepoel will have suffered through the slings and arrows thrown by a Newbridge collective driven on by the brilliance of their captain Jimmy O'Brien in a super back division.
The Kildare boys went behind to Tim Foley's penalty and in front when lock Brian Larkin made the initial surge and hooker Conor Johnson showed stunning pace for a real gem of a try.
From there, the Roscrea pack simply took over for a 10-minute period that yielded tries for flanker Mattie Keane, number eight Dan Trayers and left wing Joe Murphy to take control at 20-5 by the 28th minute.
The second surge came from Newbridge with O'Brien converting his own try and another he created for Jake Howlett to get them close, but not close enough.
