One indicator of the current growth in interest in rugby has been the growing popularity of the game in some relatively unlikely parts of the city, such as Tallaght and Finglas.
The inaugural running of the Fingal Development Blitz, which takes place at Dublin City University's sports grounds, on the Ballymun road, Dublin 11, on Sunday, September 21, makes an interesting case in point.
The tournament is a blitz for U-16 and U-18 Development sides and this year will be contested by Unidare-Finglas RFC, Clondalkin RFC, Ratoath RFC and Tallaght RFC.
The tournament will be played in a conventional 10-a-side format, with all teams playing three half-hour matches against each of the other sides, on a full pitch.
The idea was conceived by Unidare, who last year came runners up in the Metro U-18 league with a squad drawn from Ballymun and Finglas. The club is currently recruiting players from the Dublin 11 area for their Under 14, 16 and 18 squads and have 12 fully qualified coaches working with their young squads.
The Liam Mellows Perpetual Cup will be awarded to the winners of the Under-16 tournament and the Matt Harris Perpetual Cup to the winners of the U-18 competition.
It is hoped that this tournament will expand in the future and stronger links will be formed between the region's developing sides.
The Leinster Branch will be supporting the event and all players will receive official Leinster Branch merchandise on the day.
The tournament will be completed in time to allow everybody to catch the All-Ireland Final in the afternoon, and all competing club officials and mentors are warmly invited to enjoy some genuine north side hospitality in Matt Weldon's/The Slipper pub, a one minute drive from the ground, to enjoy the match over a friendly pint.
