Fitzpatrick lords it as King's hit High note
THE CLASS of Ireland U18 Schools' wing Ian Fitzpatrick, operating at outside centre for King's Hospital, was the decisive factor on the 15-10 victory over an unlucky High School in the Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Cup second round at Lakeland's Park yesterday.
The Rathgar school was on the cusp of a surprise on the basis of tries by their captain, Stephen Alexander, and left wing, Conor Sexton, when Fitzpatrick popped up to take the ball to the posts for Josh Dowds to convert in the 66th minute. Even then, High School twice went close to retrieving the situation on or over the Hospital line only to be repelled by staunch defence.
Newbridge have put together a sharp backline that delivered all six of their tries in the 43-10 beating of Sandford Park out in Westmanstown. Wing Phil O'Neill and centre Charlie Ryan both bagged a brace with full-back Dan O'Loughlin and wing Ivan Briody weighing in with one as fly-half Robbie Mullen shot 13 points from the boot.
The Patrick Collins-coached Sandford side did not go down without a fight. They even hit home for final quarter tries from left wing Cian Martin and centre Niall Campbell.
Templeogue College were no match for Wesley College (39-0) where they leaked five tries to back rowers Niall Carmody, Harry Bower and Andrew Walsh, centre Johnny Lewis and left wing James Quinlan at Kilternan.
