Fitzgerald and Walsh connect Railway titles

RAILWAY UNION Men's 1st XV claimed Division 2B of the Leinster League with one game to spare with a hard-fought victory away to Edenderry on Sunday.

It is the club's first league title since winning the old Division Three title in 1995/96, and there are two connections between the Railway side then and now.

Current 1st XV team manager Jack Walsh played on that team and, even more remarkably, John Fitzgerald played in 1995/96 and on Sunday.

Not only did the Limerick man put in a full 80 minutes at tighthead, he led a pack that dominated Edenderry at scrum time and scored Railway's only try in an 11-10 victory.

There was relief among the Railway players that Fitzgerald's constant reminders that he was the only current player with a Leinster League medal would finally stop!
