Blackrock pay homage to stalwarts of female game
IT IS all change for Blackrock College's women's team as the side has had to bid farewell to six honorable members due to to retirement.
Shirley Corcoran, Orla Brennan, Debbie Clarke, Melissa Slevin, Julie Doyle and Sinead Delaney have all hung up their boots as 'Rock also lost another two to transfers, Grace Davitt going to Cooke RFC and Yvonne Nolan returning to Old Belvedere to become their player/coach.
All eight players have represented Leinster during their playing careers.
Shirley only ever played for Blackrock and proudly wore the jersey for nine years.
Throughout that time, Shirley's favourite memory was winning the All Ireland League final.
Orla, who holds 47 caps for Ireland and is also Trevor Brennan's cousin, played with 'Rock for six years. Orla's sweetest memory wearing the blue and white stripes was watching team-mate Davitt score the winning drop goal against UL Bohs to win the AIL final.
Sinead played for Leinster and Blackrock in the number 12 jersey.
Melissa, Debbie and Julie fall into a different form of retirement. These ladies are all expecting new bundles of joy, so this may not be the end for them in 'Rock colours.
Melissa played with Blackrock for nine years, an original with Shirley. This lock has plenty of strength and determination so she may take to the 'Rock pitches again in the future.
Debbie brought great pride to Blackrock, representing Ireland and Leinster with fellow retiree Orla in the back row.
Julie is 'Rock's queen of the N7, but, alas, the mileage has finally become too much. Julie has represented Leinster and Blackrock for two years.
Everyone in Blackrock would like to thank all our retirees for their commitment to women's rugby over the years and wish them all the best in the future.
