Bagnal and Spain make sure girls play rugby

Fifty girls from Clane, Cill Dara, Portarlington and Naas met at Clane RFC last Saturday to play the first blitz of the season. Two strong 7's teams from Naas played three matches each before playing a full 15-a-side match against a combined Clane/Cill Dara team.

All the girls involved played fast, skillful rugby under the coaching of Tony Owens and Carole Collins.

As this was the first match of the season, and indeed the first match ever for quite a few players, the emphasis was on getting as much game experience as possible.

Girls' rugby in Leinster is growing very quickly with the support of Leinster development officers Jennie Bagnal and Noeleen Spain. Jennie and Noeleen were on hand in Clane to tell the girls what's in store for them this season -- regular blitzes, demo matches at women's interprovincial games, and skills sessions with established internationals.

Some of the try scorers on the day included Amy O'Brien and Aoife Meade of Naas RFC.

The girls' team in Naas is actively looking for new players, so if you want to get involved, or you know someone else who might be interested, call David Mckeown on 086-3894286.
