AIRTRICITY League new boys Cabinteely have won praise for an historic win on their debut as a senior sde.

But while Eddie Gormley's players are proudly joint top of the Division One table after John McKeon's goal gave them the win over Wexcord Youths in front of a healthy crowd of 1,300, the pitch at their Stradbrook home has home in for heavy criticism. "The pitch was a joke, to be honest," said Wexford boss Shane Keegan after his side suffered that 1-0 loss..

"I had a look at it last Friday and it was an improvement on last Friday because at least it was rolled. There's no grass on it. It's a ridiculous scenario that League of Ireland football is allowed to be played on it, but at the same time it was the same pitch for both teams and we can't blame the pitch for our poor performance.

"A lack of grass has no bearing on our first touch and our passing all over the pitch - both were very, very poor. We can't blame that on the surface."
