Paper Talk: Man United continue to pursue Neymar and Sadio Mane in €200m double swoop
Manchester United are still hopeful of adding Barcelona star Neymar and Southampton's Sadio Mane before the close of the transfer window next week.
The Catalans have brushed aside media speculation linking Neymar with a world record transfer move to United, revealing the club will soon offer the Brazilian superstar a contract extension, but it is believed the Red Devils are still in contact over a possible deal.
Reports in England claimed United were prepared to spend £240 million - £130m on Neymar's buyout clause and the remainder on tying the player to a long-term contract at Old Trafford - to acquire the 23-year-old.
A more realistic transfer target would appear to be Southampton speedster Sadio Mane.
The Senegalese international has impressed since his £10m move to St Mary's last summer and has been linked with a number of clubs during the summer, most notably United.
The Saints have put a £20m price tag on the player, but today's Daily Star reports that Louis van Gaal is hopeful to have both players in his squad by next Tuesday, the final day of the transfer window.
And the Old Trafford targets don't end there in the same paper. Benfica's Nicolas Gaitan has rejected a move to Al-Ahli we are told in favour of a transfer to United. The Argentinian winger has been tipped to be the man to replace Angel Di Maria at Old Trafford.
Everton appear resigned to the fact that John Stones will end up at Chelsea and have targeted Tottenham Hotspur defender Fazio as his replacement. The Daily Mail says a £5m bid is on the cards.
Speaking of Spurs, winger Erik Lamela is in talks with Inter Milan, his father and agent has confirmed (Express), while Zenit St Petersburg will resist any attempt by Chelsea to sign Ezequiel Garay if they pursue the central defender as an alternative to John Stones (Telegraph).
