World champion Frampton ready to be a knock-out in US
Al Haymon, adviser to Floyd Mayweather, is now working with IBF world champion Carl Frampton (pictured).
Manager Barry McGuigan has long insisted The Jackal would become a star in America. Now, with Haymon on board, McGuigan and Frampton (20-0, 14 KOs) take a major step with a title defence against 22-year old Mexican star Alejandro Gonzalez Jr (25-1-2, 15 KOs) in El Paso on July 18.
The bout will be screened live coast-to-coast on CBS. McGuigan knows the risk of introducing an Irish fighter to America in an afternoon fight in front of a passionate partisan border town crowd in high summer. "Gonzalez Jr is a hungry and dangerous Mexican," he says.
"But Frampton is an exceptional fighter with a brilliant personality. He has all the ingredients to become a major star in the USA."
In April, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom offered Frampton £1.5 to fight WBA champion Scott Quigg in Manchester.
Frampton, declined saying: "This huge domestic fight can only take place as a co-promotion."
