Top seed Serena Williams held on to record a hard-fought win over Victoria Azarenka to reach the Madrid Open quarter-finals, while double defending champion Rafael Nadal progressed into the third round of the men's competition.

Williams battled to a 7-6 (7/5) 3-6 7-6 (7/1) win in two hours and 43 minutes. Nadal claimed a comfortable straight-sets win (6-4 6-3) over Steve Johnson.
