Rovers hail Cab' to League Cup quarter-finals

shamrock Rovers were the party poopers in Cabinteely last night as the hosts succumbed on a scoreline of 2-0 in their EA Sports Cup second round clash.

Rovers manager Pat Fenlon slightly rotated his squad with an eye on Friday's Premier Division clash away to Derry City.

But the Hoops' patience paid off on 58 minutes when midfielder Seán O'Connor made the breakthrough by heading home from close range. Six minutes later, the tie was effectively over as Brandon Miele hit Rovers' second.

Meanwhile, struggling Sligo Rovers crashed out to Derry City in extra-time at the Showgrounds.

Sligo had to play the extra period with 10 men after Danny Ledwith was red-carded in the 78th minute, and League Cup specialists Derry made their numerical advantage count in the 103rd minute through Séamus Sharkey.

Mark Timlin hit Derry's second in the 133th minute to condemn Sligo to yet another defeat.

At the RSC, First Division Waterford United were over-powered 2-0 by their Munster rivals Cork City.

Ross Gaynor gave the visitors the lead on 47 minutes courtesy of a penalty, and Rob Lehane doubled Cork's lead in the 78th minute as John Caulfield's side progressed to the quarter-finals.

At Eamon Deacy Park, Galway United beat Cockhill Celtic 4-2 to advance.
