Close to a thousand runners turned out for the annual Rathfarnham 5k, held on a perfect autumn morning last Sunday.

John Travers of Donore was winning the race for the first time, although he has run it a few times in the past, most notably in 2015 when he finished third and first junior in 14 minutes 18 seconds. That same year, Martin Fagan set a course record of 13 minutes 54 secs.

On Sunday, Travers was out on his own from the start and crossed the line in a comfortable 14 minutes 21 seconds. Brandon Hargreaves of DSD who has been winning a number of road races over the past few weeks, finished second in 14 mins 37 secs, with Kilkenny veteran Brian Maher third in 14.51 and Leevale's Colm Sheahan just four seconds behind for fourth.

Donore took the team prize, beating the home team Rathfarnham WSAF and Waterford AC.

First woman home was Finn Valley's Teresa Doherty in a time of 16 mins 27secs - over a minute faster than she had run for third place last year. Doherty, better known by her single name of McGloin, is in the form of her life at the moment and on a good day for the family, husband Ciaran finished first over 40.

Incidentally, Teresa is a cousin of Breege Connolly one of the two women with a marathon qualifying time for Rio '16.

Second of the women for a second year was Orla Drumm in 16 mins 34 secs with her Crusaders club mate Caroline Crowley in third and Crusaders best of the teams.
