Rio Olympics the goal for Egan after European bronze

After her bronze medal for 5000m at the European Sprint Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, Jenny Egan (pictured)is back training with her sights set on Olympic qualification.

In Racice, the Salmon Leap canoeist was within a second of the winner Maryna Litvinchuk of Belarus and just quarter of a second behind Irene Burgo from Italy, who finished second.

The three had broken away from the rest of the field after the first 1,000m into the race and continued to widen the gap, with the medal positions decided in a sprint for the line.

Egan's medal was a first ever for Ireland at this level. Over the Olympic distances of 500m and 200m, she finished 15th and 16th.

Big target this season is the World Championships in Milan in August which is the opening qualificatier for Rio '16.

Egan missed out on qualifying for London 2012 by a single place. She will also compete in the inaugural European Olympics in Baku this summer. Also in Racice, Patrick O'Leary was 4th in the para 200m.
