Newman pots her first title to take over No 1 spot from Bryan

Annette Newman from Carlow took her first National Snooker Championship title at Joey's Snooker Club Dublin when she beat defending champion Sandra Bryan.

On her way to the final, Newman (inset) had beaten Jessica Kazimba, Tina Keogh and Emirjeta Doda, while Bryan saw off Robyn Delaney, Englentina Doda and Margaret Browne.

In the best of three frame final, Newman made a determined start, winning the opening the frame. Bryan took the second and there followed a closely fought deciding frame before Newman potted blue to pink to win the match and take over from Bryan as Irish No 1.

Margaret Browne, who dusted off her snooker cue earlier this year after a long break from the game, and schoolgirl Emirjeta Doda are at No 3 and 4.

Others to make the top eight include Christine Carr, Valerie Maloney, Tina Keogh and Laura Regan.

In the Intermediate Plate final, Dubliner Laura Alves beat Laura Regan from Tipperary for the title.
