The win leaves the westerners one game behind DCU Saints in the crucial fourth spot in the Nivea For Men's SuperLeague while still possessing a game in hand. With today's game taking place inside the friendly confines of NUI Galway, Moycullen will fancy their chances of ending 2012 on a high note.
While the league title may be somewhat outside of their potential grasp, Moycullen will not be lacking in motivation as they chase a spot in the end of season Champions Trophy four-team playoff.
The new structures implemented this season have replaced the old SuperLeague play-offs with this third major competition. The winners of the SuperLeague and Superleague Cup will both automatically gain entrance to the Champions Trophy, while the remaining two spots will be awarded to the next highest placed teams in the SuperLeague.
Should a team achieve the double of league and cup -- as happened last season with UL Eagles -- then the next three highest placed teams in the league would advance into the competition.
Fourth spot in the league is likely to be enough to gain entrance to the Champions Trophy and for this young Moycullen team, qualification for the end-of-year competition would be a major accomplishment ensuring -- for the first time in the club's SuperLeague existence -- that their season would extend past the first weekend in March.
There is also action this weekend in the Nivea Women's SuperLeague as first placed UL Huskies meet second placed Team Montenotte Hotel Cork in Limerick.
