Maguire and Robinson test themselves against the best
IRISH pair Gavin Maguire and Ashley Robinson start their campaigns at the World Table Tennis Championships in Suzhou, China tomorrow.
Their aim is to survive the preliminary rounds of the singles and make it into the main draw.
The pair, both playing professionally on the European club circuit, have taken notable scalps from inside the world's top 150 in the past few years, with Robinson acquitting himself well at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last summer and Maguire beating Welsh No 1 Ryan Jenkins, as well as top 200 player Miroslav Horesji from the Czech Republic.
Only 128 places are on offer in the main draw with Chinese players expected to dominate. The pair will also play in the doubles.
Leading the team as non-playing manager is John Murphy a veteran of eight world championships.
"It's obviously a very difficult format for them and they know they must be at their best right from the off."
