Impressive Watkins and Fitzsimons rule the waves!

BARRY WAKTINS and Michael Fitzsimons won the K2 1000m at the recent Nottingham Regatta in England - an encouraging start to the season over an Olympic distance.

On a good weekend for the Irish, Peter Egan and Tom Brennan finished second in the K2 200m, while para-canoeist Paddy O'Leary was third in the K1 200m. Jenny Egan was fourth in both the K1 500m and 200m and Ryan O'Connor fifth in the junior K1.

In slalom canoeing, an Irish team is currently competing at the Junior and U23 World Slalom Canoeing Championships in Brazil. Robert Hendrick, Noel Hendrick and Ali McCreery are competing in the junior K1 class, Jake Cochrane in U23 C1, Elliott Davidson in U23 K1 and Aisling Conlan in women's K1.

Locally, Meath teenager Caoimhe O'Ferrell, who finished seventh in women's senior C1 at the British Slalom Canoeing Open last autumn, begins her season's campaign next weekend at Nottingham. O'Ferrell, now aged 17, competes in C1 boat.
