IABA insist Irish boxers will be ready for Rio
IABA bosses say morale remains high despite the shock exit of head coach Billy Walsh.
"I've been amazed at how united the coaches and the boxers are," says Chairman Joe Christle. "Everyone is delighted that Zaur Antia is the interim coach because they not only like him but respect him. All the coaches have said they are going to redouble their efforts so that there is no dip in standards while the process is under way to find a permanent replacement for Billy Walsh (left).
"By their nature, the Elite boxers are an incredibly resilient and focused bunch of athletes," says IABA Board member Ciaran Kirwan. "It's our job to ensure that they get every support going forward, both those who've already qualified for Rio and those who will hope to qualify in the upcoming international tournaments. We're confident they will not be derailed in their attempts to succeed in Rio. We don't take success for granted.
"We know that one punch can change everything in the ring but we do believe that, come Rio, we have serious medal prospects and we expect to come home with good news."
