A fine double in the throws was recorded by Aoife Hickey of Loreto Kilkenny. After her personal best of 50.81 at the South Leinster Schools Championships a week earlier, Hickey had hoped to improve on Eileen O'Keeffe's Leinster Schools record of 49.51, but fell short with a best of 48.24, still enough to give her an emphatic win.

She then added the shot title to her collection, with a best effort of 12.31. Another Kilkenny girl, Ciara Everard from Presentation, who had run a World Juniors qualifying time of 2:08.15 to win the 800m at Irishtown just three days earlier, was a double winner in the senior girl's 400m and 800m.

HYNES has the rest playing catch-up

Sprinter Michael Hynes of St Fintan's won both the senior 100m and 200m. He beat Jonathan Holmes of Kilkenny College in the 100m and Cormac Doherty of Castleknock in the 200m, with Holmes third. At inter level, Mark Kavanagh of Oatlands won the 200m, but was pipped for victory in the 100m by Templeogue's Paul Whelan.

The 400m produced a thrilling battle between Joseph Dowling of Rockbrook Park and Fergal Duffy from St Benildus, with victory going to Dowling in 52.92.

leighio edges to a tight 800m victory

Anthony Leighio of Crumlin College sneaked a win over Mark McDonald from St Aidan's in the senior boy's 800m. Tomas Cotter of St Mary's Dundalk was a surprise winner of the 1500m, while Michael Mulhare from CBS Portloaise had a comfortable victory in the 5000m Cross-country champion Jake Byrne from Rochfortbridge got the better of Mullingar's Shane Boggs to win the inter 3000m. In the 1500m, Philip Hilliard of Hartstown continued a family tradition when he triumphed.

brennan digs deep to earn victories

Ailish Brennan of Heywood narrowly won both inter girl's 800m and 1500m. In the 800m, she just edged out Claire Earls from Dominican Wicklow, while in the 1500m she got the better of Fiona McKenna, Loreto Dalkey. Tekea Gebrezgi of St Dominic's won a highly tactical senior girl's 1500m, beating Grace Sweeney of Loreto Foxrock on the final lap. Sweeney had earlier won the 3000m.

Belvo the masters in heavy throws

Killian Barry of Belvedere threw just short of 60 metres when he won the intermediate boy's hammer title with a best of 59.93m. Schoolmate Conal Campion was second. Belvedere dominated the field events, with CJ Barry winning the senior hammer and Ben Geraghty winning the shot and coming second in the discus. Ian Rogers, De La Salle Raheny, jumped 4.20m to win the senior pole vault.
