Harrington to drive at Volvo

GOLF: MAJOR winners Pádraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Ernie Els and will play in this month's Volvo Golf Championship, tournament organisers announced yesterday.

Dubliner Harrington and South African Els, both winners of three major titles, and Portrush native Clarke, the 2011 Open champion, will compete for the €350,000 first prize at The Links in Fancourt from January 19-22.

The Volvo Golf Championship is open only to European Tour players who have won an event on the previous year's tour, the only exception being current tour members with more than 10 European Tour victories.



Murray beats off Baghdatis

Tennis: Top seed Andy Murray showed no mercy to doubles partner Marcos Baghdatis today as he cruised to a 6-2 6-2 victory in the quarter-finals of the ATP Brisbane International.

The world number four, who along with the Cypriot was knocked out of the doubles competition yesterday, was quick out of the blocks and looked full of confidence as he raced into a 4-0 lead which he never looked in danger of relinquishing.



Clarke inspires Aussie victory

CRICKET: Michael Clarke dismissed Sachin Tendulkar to spark an Indian collapse a day after scoring a triple century as Australia won the second test by an innings and 68 runs today to take a 2-0 series lead.

After man-of-the-match Clarke claimed the key wicket of Tendulkar for 80 shortly after lunch, Australia went on to take five wickets in the middle session.

Australia eventually bowled India out for 400 in their second innings shortly after tea to take an iron grip on the four-match series.



Clijsters into Brisbane semi

Tennis: Kim Clijsters reached the semi-finals of the Brisbane International yesterday, but second seed Andrea Petkovic was dumped out by Kaia Kanepi.

Clijsters beat Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-2 in her first tournament since August because of injury. Estonian Kanepi claimed a 6-1 7-6 (9/7) victory over German second seed Petkovic.
