Federer celebrates Shanghai success

Tennis: Roger Federer won the Shanghai Masters title as he overcame a determined Gilles Simon 7-6 (8/6) 7-6 (7/2) in a tight final in China.

The Frenchman broke in the first game and looked on course for the opening set but Federer broke back and took the tie-break. The Swiss, who will move up a place to number two in the ATP rankings today, was playing the better tennis but the second set also went to a tiebreak, where the 17-time grand slam winner wrapped up victory in an hour and 52 minutes.

"It's been an unbelievable week for me personally," Federer said. "I got very very lucky to come through the first round, saving five match points, so I know what a privilege it is to be here today.

"I couldn't be more happy. I'd also like to congratulate Gilles for fantastic play."

Athletics: A smiling Eliud Kipchoge broke away from a pack of three in the closing three kilometres to lead a Kenyan clean sweep in the Chicago Marathon.

Defending champion Rita Jeptoo won the women's race to continue Kenya's dominant day.

In ideal conditions, Kipchoge, a former world 5,000 metres track champion, clocked 2:04:11 to claim his third marathon title in only four races at the distance.

Sammy Kitwara (2:04:28) and Dickson Chumba (2:04:32) finished second and third.

"It was like a championship. I missed a little bit (my target of my personal best) but I am happy," 29-year-old Kipchoge said.

Rallying: Victory on home soil on Saturday for Declan and Brian Boyle (Subaru WRC) clinched a second Dunlop National Rally Championship in succession for the Donegal cousins.

They were just over one-and-a-half minutes ahead of runners-up Donagh Kelly and Kevin Flanagan at the end of nine stages in the Downings Bay Hotel Harvest Rally, scoring their fifth win from the eight rounds in the series.

The Boyles won all three of the final rounds, storming through to depose championship leaders Roy White and James O'Brien, who topped the table starting Saturday's final round.
