With a top prize of €600, a big entry is expected for this year's distance medley relay which will take place at the final two Dublin Graded League meets on July 20 in Santry and on August 3 in Tallaght.

Distances to be run on both nights are 1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m and teams must include at least one female runner. Points are according to finishing places in each race and in the event of a tie on points, the fastest time will win.

Last year's distance medley relay, also with a top prize of €600, was held on a single night and attracted 17 teams from all over the country.

From the start, Ennis Track set out their stall, with Dara Lynch giving them an early lead on the 800m leg and Niamh Markham consolidating that lead on the the second leg over 400m.

Among the chasers were squads from Raheny Shamrock, Rathfarnham WSAF, Liffey Valley and a number of teams from Sportsworld.

On the third leg over 1200m, Damian Landers extended the Ennis lead although David Rooney for Raheny did his best to hunt him down. When Landers handed over to Rory Chesser for the final 1600m, the race was all but over. Chesser crossed the line in 10:15.17, over 14 seconds ahead of Raheny squad with Rathfarnham third.

Team members can warm up for the medley relay at tonight's Graded League Round 6 in Irishtown, where races over 100m, 800m and 5000m are on offer as well as the triple jump, discus and javelin. See www.dublinathletics.com for more details.
