Basketball: Eagles fly in for a battle at Clontarf
While the Nivea Women's SuperLeague and both Division Ones take a break over the holidays, there are two matches this weekend in Dublin in the Nivea For Men's SuperLeague.
Tonight, Killester and UL Eagles square off in Clontarf while a day later it is the turn of UCD Marian and DCU Saints in Belfield.
With the holiday period traditionally marking the halfway point of the season, Killester will be eager to begin the second half of the season better than they did the first.
A perennial contender, the north Dublin club have found themselves much further down the pecking order in 2012/13 than they would be accustomed to.
With just four wins and eight losses so far, they currently lie fifth in the table despite having played an extra game to every team bar their opponents today, Eagles.
The addition of Michael Bonaparte before Christmas seems to have rejuvenated the squad, however, and defeating them will be a far more difficult task for table-toppers Eagles than when the teams last met, an 18-point victory for the Shannonsiders in November.
Tomorrow, the cross-city match-up between UCD Marian and DCU Saints promises to be an intriguing affair with new Saints signing Conor Grace continuing to find his feet within the team.
His size, along with the power of front-court running mate Martins Provisors changes the dynamic of the Saints team. It will be interesting to see if the free-flowing scorers of Marian can unlock a formidable Saints defence that boasts the speed of renowned ball stoppers like Emmett Donnelly along with shot-blocking centres such as Provisors and Grace.
In terms of league standings, the win would probably mean more for Saints who, on five wins and six losses, still have an outside chance of winning the title.
Marian, meanwhile, are trying to put some respectability on their record. Despite having an extremely talented squad, they find themselves with just three wins from 11 games this so far this season.
