Athletics: Lark in Park for Callaghan and Alexander
A busy weekend on the roads saw Eoin Callaghan of Star of the Sea and Karen Alexander of Acorns AC leading home an entry of almost 7,000 at the SSE Airtricity Half Marathon in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Callaghan’s time of 68 mins 21 secs saw him finish over a minuet ahead of Clonliffe’s David Mansfield.
The women’s race was closer with Alexander just 14 seconds clear of Aine O’Reilly. Leading them all home was paralympian Patrick Monahan in a classy time of 54 mins 8 secs.
A day later, Ismail Ssenyange and Maria McCambridge came out on top at the Charleville International Half Marathon in Co Cork.
For Ssenyange, who is Ugandan and a member of the Dubai Creek Striders, it was third time lucky – he finished second in 2013 and last year.
McCambridge was winning for a third time. Her time of 73 mins 28 secs wasn’t as fast as her course record of 72:27 secs set last year, but it shows that her training is progressing nicely.
Finishing second overall was Ian Kiprono, who is assistant coach to Brother Colm McConnell at the famed athletics academy in Iten, Kenya. Also running was Sonia O’Sullivan who, like Kiprono, had run the Sonia 5km in Cobh the night before.
So close in that race were Gideon Kimosop 1st and Dan Tanui second that they were given the same time. Third was Slieve Gullion’s Paddy Hamilton. First and second women were Mercy Jemitai and Rosina Gibionia with Rathfarnham’s Caitríona Jennings finished third.
