Old rivals cross paths as next generation shine

PLENTY of banter at Páirc Uí Mhurchú.Former inter-county stars Niall Guiden (Dublin) and Graham Geraghty (Meath) had a cup of tea, and shared a saucer full of memories.

Their two daughters had just played against each other in the Leinster U14 Championship. Caitlin Guiden for the Dubs and Lauren Geraghty of the Royals - the Dubs won 6-5 to 3-2.

Their fathers had much to talk about.

Geraghty was one of the most colourful and talented footballers of his generation.

Niall played with pace and guile for the Dubs. He first got the call from Gerry McCaul. He played in the famous Dublin v Meath four-timer in 1991.

Kevin Foley was among his markers in those Meath clashes. Both men ran marathons.

He played for Kilmore and Raheny. Brian Talty coached him at St David's CBS. Alan Larkin invited him onto the Dublin minor squad. They reached the All-Ireland MFC semi-final. Colleagues included Paul Curran, Keith Barr and Donal McCarthy.

If the Dublin and Meath U14s keep on progressing, Niall and Graham could well be sharing another pot of tea …….. following the Leinster final.
