Mighty Mike to bring Dutch gold to Citywest
World Champion Michael van Gerwen will be the star attraction on day two of the partypoker.com World Darts Grand Prix in Dublin this evening.
A winner of the tournament back in 2012, van Gerwen will be looking to add to that when he begins his challenge tonight with a first round clash against fellow Dutch player Vincent van der Voort.
"It's a very difficult game because we're very close friends, but we'll be professional and will be trying as hard as we can to get the win," said van Gerwen.
"It's always special coming back to Dublin and it would be great to win the World Grand Prix again. The win in 2012 was a big moment in my career and it gave me a lot of confidence to go on and win the big titles I have since."
There will be plenty of Dutch interest at the Citywest tonight as the reigning Premier League Darts champion Raymond van Barneveld is also due on stage in what is arguably the clash of the round as he takes on Dave Chisnall in the penultimate game due off.
Van Barneveld was twice a runner-up in the Grand Prix which uses the unique double start/double finish format and he is the eight seed for this week.
The pretty eccentric Peter Wright has catapulted up through the ranks in recent seasons and can now boast being the number four player in the World and he will get his week underway when taking on Jamie Caven in he second match with Terry Jenkins and possible lively outsider for success this week Kim Huybrechts getting the play started (7pm).
Other games taking place tonight include Mervyn King's battle with Wes Newtwon which could prove hard to call as will Dean Winstanley against Michael Smith.
The Lakeside Champion from this year Stephen Smith will make his debut in Dublin when taking on Ronnie Baxter and play will come to an end close to midnight when Simon Whitlock and Richie Burnett battle it out for a place in the second round on Thursday night.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased from Citywest.
