Long: Young talent Best deserves Bohs place
BOHEMIANS boss Keith Long says he has high hopes for young defender Stephen Best at Dalymount Park, writes AIDAN FITZMAURICE.
Best, who has just celebrated his 18th birthday, was handed his full league debut as part of a patched-up defence for last week's test away to Shamrock Rovers, and the defender delivered a very solid performance as the back four kept the Hoops scoreless, playing out a 0-0 draw.
The teenager may have to drop to the bench for tomorrow's game away to Drogheda United as Anto Murphy is back from suspension but manager Long was very pleased with Best's outing.
"Stephen is a player we have high hopes for. We have to manage his game-time for the benefit of Stephen and the team," said Long.
"He has a big-game mentality for someone so young and he has a good temperament. He fully justified his selection, making his full league debut against Shamrock Rovers.
"If he continues to work hard, and keeps his feet on the ground, he can only improve as a player. But we are pleased with his progress."
Best made three sub appearances in the league last season, earning a red card along the way, but showed no sign of first-night nerves when he made his first league start against Rovers.
"Last week was tough on a part-time squad, three games in six days, but we have fully recovered, prepared well and are fully focused on Drogheda," added Long.
