Late starter Kearns clocks in a close win
Seán Kearns of Dunshaughlin Community College started late but put in a solid run to win the 5th/6th year boys' category at the Leinster Schools Orienteering Championships in Carrigolligan Woods, Co Dublin.
Kearns clocked a time of 42 mins 4 secs for the tough 4.4km course, finishing 25 seconds faster than Jesse Lopez of St Kilian's Bray.
Performance of the day came from Eoin Riordan of St Gerard's Bray, who won 2nd/3rd year boys' 2.3km race by over eight minutes.
Winning the Transition Year boys' title was Ruairi Long of Rockbrook, with Conall Whelan of St Kieran's Kilkenny second.
In a class of her own in the 5th/6th year girls' category was Arianna Harris of Wilson's Hospital.
Much closer was the Transition Year girls' race which was won by Rachel Armstrong of Castleknock CC from Aoife Donaghy of St Dominic's Cabra.
Castleknock's Rachel Amstrong took victory in the 2nd/3rd year age group.
