Postulation can get Weld off to a flier

THINK Galway, think Dermot Weld. Nothing new in that, of course, but even by his astonishing standards, Weld's record in today's claregalwayhotel.ie Maiden (6.10) is remarkable, having taken contest seven times in the last 11 years, with the likes of Mustajeeb and Grey Swallow.

Will Postulation, his representative in this year's renewal of the maiden mentioned above be adding to the total? Quite possibly, given the promise he showed when sixth on his debut at the Curragh last month, although he will have to reverse form with Aidan O'Brien's Jamaica, which finished three places in front of him.

Another trainer who excelled at this meeting last year was Tony Martin and he has a strong hand in the following Connacht Hotel Handicap (6.45) with Spacious Sky and Quick Jack. The latter, a useful hurdler, was beaten at this meeting last year but better conditions 12 months later ought to suit.

Weld saddles Polished Rock in the opening Radissonhotelgalway.com & Galwaybayhotel.com Novice Hurdle (5.10), but may have to give best to Tony Mullins' Erlkonig.

Annus Mirabilis has a 5lb penalty to carry in the Pillo Hotel Handicap (7.45) for breaking his duck in an ordinary maiden at Leopardstown last week. That could leave him vulnerable to the John Oxx-trained Primogeniture.
