Gosden-trained Journey to end in victory

JOURNEY has plenty to find on the official figures with some of her peers in the Betfred TV/EBF Hoppings Stakes at Newcastle but she has looked a reformed character of late.

The John Gosden-trained filly initially looked disappointing and it took her four runs to break her maiden.

Home bred by George Strawbridge, her mother Montare won a French St Leger but was notoriously highly strung and that appeared to be the case with Journey.

However, Frankie Dettori has been on board the last twice and she has been far more tractable. On her penultimate outing at Goodwood she went down narrowly to James Fanshawe's Speedy Boarding.

At the time the form looked nothing out of the ordinary, but Fanshawe rates the winner very highly indeed and she came out and impressively won the Ballymacoll Stud Stakes next time out.

The pair did pull six lengths clear of the remainder at Goodwood so it was no surprise when Journey finally came good next time out at Newbury.

Given an easy time of things at the head of affairs, Dettori got her to settle and was able to give one of his special waiting-in-front rides, beating some highly-touted fillies easily.

She has 10lb and more to find with some in this Listed event, but when the penny drops with a filly, especially one from this yard, you never quite know where their improvement will end.

MADAME BUTTERFLY should be able to break her duck at the second time of asking in the Betfred "Racing's Biggest Supporter" Maiden Stakes.

The David O'Meara-trained and Robert Ogden-owned filly is a half-sister to Amazing Maria, a Royal Ascot winner for the pair last week. Well backed on her debut at Thirsk, she bumped into a smart filly in the shape of William Haggas' Tempting, but there appears to be nothing of that class this time around.

There's a disappointing turnout of only 10 in the Betfred Gosforth Park Cup but that may work in the favour of NORTHGATE LAD.

He is only a three-year-old so taking part in a rough and tumble race like this in previous years may have been a bit much, but the small field negates his lack of experience.
