Common sense went missing at Curragh
IT WAS no secret in the build up to the Irish Derby that Roger Varian wanted nothing more than to run Kingston Hill in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby so the way he was treated after pulling the horse out was extremely disappointing.
Roger was fined €12,500 for not running Kingston Hill last Saturday as he withdrew the horse due to the ground and as there was no change in the going from declaration time the stewards fined him which is ridiculous.
Nobody could have questioned Roger's intent. He walked the track and gave it every chance to run Kingston Hill which is what everyone wanted for the race but when the race didn't come he took the horse out as he didn't want to risk him.
Unfortunately it looks like he will have to withdraw from the Eclipse tomorrow as well but he is right not to take any chances.
In a week when a lot was said about what can be done for the Irish Derby, I thought it was a terrible shame that common sense didn't prevail last Saturday following Kingston Hill's withdrawal.
We are looking for trainers to support the race and run horses in it but few would blame Roger Varian if he thought twice about sending a horse over here again.
