Helsinki showdown for Dublin wheelie skaters

A squad of 14 from the Dublin Roller Derby team are in Finland this weekend for a match against Helsinki - a team ranked tenth in Europe.

Roller derby - a fast and furious, all-female contact sport on wheels - is big in Europe and earlier this season, the DRD played Eindhoven from Holland in Dublin and later travelled to Spain to face Barcelona. Coming up are matches against British and French teams.

In a busy weekend for the sport, the club's B and B teams are at the National Basketball Area in Tallaght today, where they play the Limerick Roller Girls, the Roller Girls of the Apocalypse and the Cork City Firebirds.

Roller derby in Dublin, based in Inchicore, dates back to 2009 and operates internationally under the rules of the WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association). Want to try the most exciting sport on roller skates? See www.dublinrollerderby.com or email freshmeat@gmail.com
