synger sizzle as o'gara shines
Templeogue Synge Street2-9 Na Fianna0-14
First-half goals by Denis Bastick and Eoghan O'Gara proved pivotal as Templeogue Synge Street overcame Na Fianna by a single point in their Dublin SFC second round encounter at Parnell Park last night.
With a tight battle expected, it was little surprise to witness some initial sparring with Eoghan O'Gara opening the scoring in the second minute.
Na Fianna's own dangerman, Conor McHugh, was kept reasonably quiet in the early stages, but the Glasnevin outfit restored parity by the fifth minute thanks to Adam Caffrey.
The same player inched Na Fianna a point clear when converting a free four minutes later and McHugh's class was then evident as he turned sharply before slotting over from 35 yards.
Na Fianna were beginning to enjoy a marginal advantage in terms of possession but they failed to translate that into scores and their lead was reduced in the 14th minute following an excellent point by Declan Treanor.
With Na Fianna beginning to make some unforced errors in defence, Synger began to capitalise as O'Gara added his second score in the 17th minute before striking for the game's opening goal three minutes later. There was a degree of fortune attached to the score as O'Gara was initially half-blocked.
Tommy Coyle was then dragged down by Ryan O'Flaherty, and Denis Bastick was on hand to despatch the resultant penalty-kick, low to the right of replacement goalkeeper Conor McCarville.
Despite McHugh replying with a fine solo score for Na Fianna soo after, Templeogue were dominant with Conor Mckiernan dropping back to telling effect and they increased their advantage through excellent scores from Coyle and Bastick as the half progressed.
O'Gara was proving close to unplayable at this stage and after hitting the upright in the 26th minute, he made amends before the break when slotting home from close range to hand his side a deserved 2-5 to 0-6 interval lead.
Although Cillian O'Gara pushed Synge Street six points clear within 12 seconds of the restart, Na Fianna generated some momentum through successive scores by Jack Caffrey and Eoghan Neville.
However, the goal required to complete their comeback proved elusive with Eoghan O'Gara kicking another critical score in the 52nd minute as Synger held on to complete a noteworthy win.
