Lucan Sarsfields secured the first quarter-final berth in the Dublin Senior Football Championship when overcoming Ballinteer St John's by double scores on the all-weather surface at Kiltipper Road last night.

In doing so, they repeated the feat from last year as they largely controlled matters against a Ballinteer side that struggled for fluency throughout.

Brendan Gallagher proved a thorn in the side of the St John's defence over the hour and he served early notice of his intent with a cracking score in the opening minute.

St John's enjoyed their brightest period early on and Shane McCann levelled matters in the 5th minute following a powerful surge down the middle by David Devereux.

McCann added a brace of frees to inch Ballinteer two points clear but points in quick succession from Andrew Hope and Sean Newcombe restored parity for Lucan by the 13th minute.

The contest turned irrevocably in their favour by the 20th minute as they added two goals in the space of five minutes.

The first arrived at the end of the first quarter as Rory Kelly was on hand to palm home after excellent approach play by Jack Carey and Darren Gavin.

The second was a sublime individual effort from Gallagher as he raced onto Stephen O'Shaughnessy's pass before firing an audacious shot beyond the helpless Colm O'Donnell.

St John's added points in reply through Peter O'Curry, Donal Gormley and Robbie Gaughan to trim their deficit to six points (2-6 to 0-6) by the interval.

Any hopes of a comeback were dispelled within three minutes of the restart as Kelly raced unopposed to fire past O'Donnell but St John's managed a goal of their own in the 36th minute as Ciaran Judge bundled home after an error by Philip Greene.

Mícheál Ó Cróinín impressed off the bench for Ballinteer but could prove powerless as Lucan eased home with substitutes Tommy Brennan and Johnny McCaffrey sharing three points in the final quarter.
