raheny power past mearnog

New Dublin star Fenton proves the difference at Parnell Park

Raheny advanced into the 2nd round of the Dublin Senior Football Championship after overcoming a weakened Naomh Mearnóg by 1-13 to 0-7 at Parnell Park last night.

It was Mearnóg that made the more telling start as they opened the lead in the first minute following a fine point on the turn by Jamie Storey.

However, with the wind at their backs, it didn't take Raheny long to find their collective stride and after David Shatwell had levelled matters in the 4th minute, they took control through successive points from Brian Fenton and Eoin Keogh.

The contest continued in a refreshingly open manner with Ger Coady kicking a superb score for Raheny before Storey added his second of the day following excellent approach play by Andy Killeen and Shane Carthy.

Raheny continued to look the more cohesive unit and after Donal Ryan pointed a close-in free, the increasingly influential Fenton began to stamp his class on proceedings with two points on the bounce to push his side five points clear by the end of the first quarter.

Despite Storey adding another score in reply, an ankle injury to Carthy reduced the Dublin player's mobility and Raheny took full advantage as Ryan cut inside sharply in the 23rd minute before burying his shot beyond Conor Duggan from eight yards.

Ryan added another point soon after as the half petered out with Raheny enjoying a sizeable 1-8 to 0-3 interval advantage.

Storey added his side some cause for optimism with a glorious point within a minute of the restart and that momentum was maintained as Jamie Walsh converted a free soon after.

It proved a false dawn with Raheny regaining control through Keogh and Ryan as they eased home with nine points to spare.
