Lucan Sarsfields and O'Toole's shared an absorbing 0-24 to 1-21 draw in their Dublin Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final at Parnell Park last night.

There was great drama at the end of normal time when O'Toole's Niall Arthur blasted a penalty to the net to force extra-time and then late on in the second period of extra-time a Kevin O'Reilly free earned Lucan another day out

Lucan raced out of the traps through an early free from O'Reilly and despite a free at the other end from Niall Arthur that levelled matters, O'Toole's struggled to make any impression in the initial exchanges.

Extended

They continued to chase shadows as Lucan restored and then extended their lead thanks to well-taken points by Johnny McCaffrey and Eoghan Ó Conghaile before O'Reilly added another score with a superb individual effort in the fifth minute.

Despite Arthur replying with his second free of the night two minutes later, Lucan were incomplete control and they gained tangible reward for their dominance through successive points from Seán McClelland, O'Reilly and Alan Kelly.

However, it was inevitable that O'Toole's would eventually gain some kind of foothold and it duly arrived through another Arthur free and their first point from play by Peadar Carton.

Those scores seemed to stall Lucan's momentum and as some marginal calls went against them, Arthur was on hand to punish their indiscretions with three successive frees from the Clare native restoring parity by the 18th minute.

Lucan remained unperturbed by their opponents' resurgence and their ability to convert their half-chances allowed them to regain the lead as O'Reilly added another cracking point from an acute angle to complement a sublime score from a sideline cut.

The ebb and flow was maintained with O'Toole's once again drawing level through two Arthur scores but Lucan enjoyed a deserved interval advantage with a free and '65' from the irrepressible O'Reilly leaving Sarsfields 0-12 to 0-10 ahead at half-time.

An excellent score by Ó Conghaile within 30 seconds of the resumption and the enterprise of the first-half promptings was preserved with Conor Carton firing over an inspirational score in the 34th minute. Scores continued to be traded at regular intervals with both teams enjoying sporadic periods of pressure as McClelland landed a classy point from under to stand, a score mirrored by that of Conor Carton at the opposite end.

However, with the game slipping from their grasp, O'Toole's received a lifeline in added time as Arthur converted impeccably from a penalty to ensure extra-time. Then the final drama . . . a 79th minute O'Reilly free confirming a replay in Parnell Park this Sunday (2.30).
