Gavin pays tribute to a Sky Blue great
JIM GAVIN has paid tribute to the late Dave Billings for his stellar service to Dublin GAA and sport in UCD.
The legendary Sky Blue is being laid to rest today and, ahead of his funeral, Dublin senior boss Gavin recalled: "When I was a coach with the Dublin U21 team in 2003, Dave was a selector with Tommy (Lyons) with the senior team. He probably was the direct link I had with Tommy.
"Then, when I was manager in 2008 with the U21s, I would have had direct contact with Davy about players. If you asked Davy about a particular club player, he'd know the player's background, his primary school, his secondary school - and he'd probably give you five or ten other players that were worth a look.
"He'd a great knowledge of the GAA scene within Dublin at all grades and all clubs. He'll be sorely missed," Gavin added.
"I also think for his service to sport in UCD, Dave's influence can't be under-estimated. He had a great ability to give people hope and try to get them to maximise their potential. I think that was one of his greatest strengths."
