Davey Byrne and Under 21 contingent to be left out
JIM Gavin is again likely to leave Dublin’s Under 21 contingent out of his plans for Saturday’s visit of Derry to Croke Park.
With Dessie Farrell’s team preparing for a Leinster final against Kildare just six days after the Derry game, it is unlikely that Gavin will dip into the eight players cohabiting both panels for selection.
None of the eight; Shane Carthy, Davey Byrne, Cormac Costello, Lorcan Molloy, Niall Scully, Michael Deegan and Conor McHugh, played a part in Dublin’s most recent League match, their big win over Castlebar in Mayo.
Only Carthy and Costello made appearances - both from the bench - in the senior’s draw with Tyrone a round previous round.
“It hasn’t been fully decided yet as to what the situation will be for this weekend. So I don’t know,” explained Byrne, the Under 21 captain, who came on after just 17 minutes for the injured Eoin Culligan against Donegal for just his second League appearance earlier this spring.
“We’ll find out soon enough. They’ll decide between themselves.”
“Our focus is on the Under 21s, with the Championship ahead of us. We’re trying to get that right.
“Jim understands where Dessie and the team are coming from. That is advantageous to us and the players.
“He knows what we have to go through so Jim has been very decent. They’ve been very accommodating.”
Gavin could, injury permitting, elect to field the same team that blew Mayo away in such comprehensive fashion last Saturday week, a night that marked first starts of 2015 for both Paul Flynn and Diarmuid Connolly.
Of Gavin’s big guns, Michael Darragh Macauley has yet to make an appearance in this year’s League, though there is no word yet on a return date for either Alan Brogan or Ger Brennan.
