ON and off the pitch a craftsman at work. Dublin hurler Peadar Carton can make the sliotar talk. And now he's making hurleys smile.

A carpenter by trade, he's keeping busy in a new hurl-making business that's based in Kinvara, just off the Navan Road.

Bull Hurls is the name of the company and things are going well.

"It's a new venture and thankfully we have made a good start," reveals Peadar. "There are a few of the Dublin lads using the hurls already and they like them.

"We hope to do well with the clubs and the schools around Dublin, and so far the response has been very encouraging."

Previously, Peadar got his own hurleys down the country.

"That meant putting in the order and waiting for them to arrive. I thought I could make them quicker myself and I'm really enjoying it.

"I look forward to going in every day, and the fact that I'm a hurler adds to it."

Peadar is also looking forward to taking the Bull by the horns for the Dubs and O'Toole's this season.

"Dublin had a good year in 2009, but the aim is to better that again.

"And it's the same for O'Toole's. We have so many good players and we'll be trying hard to push on from last year's semi-final place."

Regarding the hurls, Dublin All Star Alan McCrabbe is a fan.

But the real seal of approval came from another master of the ash, as young Peadar asked the da, Peadar Senior, what he thought. The former Dublin maestro gave them the Q mark, and there could be no better recommendation.
