All White' on night for Crokes
STEAMING post-match grub in Glenalbyn. The players deserved it. Up the road in Silver Park, they had turned the evening golden.
Whitehall, from Division 3, deserve enormous credit. They'll take much consolation that they made the mighty Crokes work for their supper.
They battled for every ball. The hosts were granted little time to admire the evening sunshine.
Hugh McInerney and Shane O'Sullivan prospered at midfield. They gathered up plenty of breaking ball.
Jamie O'Brien impressed at centre half-back and John Bridgeman showed his pedigree in the half-forward line.
Full-forward Cormac Costello scored the point of the match deep in the second half from way out on the right. It was Seán Moran's tidy point that levelled the tie in the fourth minute. The pacey Shane Horan lofted over the first point of the hour.
Colmcille's were doing well to contain the powerful presence of Brian Kavanagh and Pat Burke. And off the bench in the second period came two all-time Stillorgan favourites, Mark Vaughan and Darren Magee.
Vaughan celebrated his arrival with a trademark free into the pavilion end.
It was 0-8 to 0-3 at the tea. Dara Mullin impressed in the Crokes attack. He scored two points before the break and the opening score of the restart. Twelve minutes from time, Kilmacud were reduced to 14 men when Ronan Ryan was sent off.
Whitehall kept at it. With two minutes left, Crokes led by six. Late strikes from David Campbell and Vaughan added a lick of paint. The home side would have added to their tally only for 13 wides, seven more than Whitehall.
