Defeat by Juventus in Turin last night was enough for Abramovich to summon Di Matteo to Stamford Bridge this morning for a summit meeting.
Shortly afterwards, news broke that Di Matteo has joined Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant, Phil Scolari, Carlo Ancelotti and Andre Villas-Boas on the list of Abramovich's managerial casualties.
Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is in the frame to take over on a temporary basis but there is little doubt that Abramovich is in hot pursuit, along with Manchester City and United, of Pep Guardiola's signature.
"The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season," said a Chelsea statement this morning.
It continued: "The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager."
