Chelsea make late attempt to snatch £22m Pedro from United and prepare fourth John Stones bid

Chelsea have made a dramatic bid to hijack Manchester United’s move for Barcelona forward Pedro.

United looked set to complete the signing of Pedro after executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew to Barcelona for talks on Monday.

But Chelsea have now entered the race to land Pedro and hope to convince the Spaniard to move to Stamford Bridge after holding their own talks with Barca.

Chelsea almost signed Pedro in January, but instead went for Juan Cuadrado, who has been a huge disappointment at Stamford Bridge.

United have been haggling over Pedro’s £22million fee, which has let Chelsea in and the Blues are hopeful they can conclude a deal.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has convinced owner Roman Abramovich that he needs reinforcements following a poor start to the season.

Other than trying to beat United to Pedro, Chelsea want to see whether or not John Stones asks to leave Everton before submitting a fourth offer for the central defender.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, Chelsea have had a third bid of £30 million turned down by Everton and are now considering their next move.

Chelsea are willing to go higher to land Stones before the transfer window shuts, but are waiting to see whether their latest rejected bid prompts any reaction from the 21-year-old.

The Premier League champions believe that they have demonstrated their commitment to Stones, with bids of £20m, £26m and £30m, and are now interested to see whether the player is equally determined to move to Stamford Bridge.

Everton continue to publically insist that Stones is not for sale, but the Goodison Park club could struggle to hold on to the England international if he makes it clear he wants to go.
