Captain Nolan leads by example as Ireland win
WITH a year to go until the next European qualifiers, a new-look Irish women's volleyball team beat both the Northern Ireland senior and under-19 teams at the annual St Patrick's International held in Trinity College.
Matches between the teams are always close, and this one proved no exception.
In the opening set, Ireland just edged it at 25-21, and then went on to lead 10-0 in the second before strong serving from Northern Ireland gave them six quick points.
Ireland still piled up the pressure with superb blocking and hitting from Karen Benn, smart play in the middle from captain Edel Nolan and vice-captain Regina Halpin, big serving from Roisin Roantree and stout defence from libero Clodagh Doherty.
They won the set 25-17 and although the third set proved closer, were never really troubled, taking it 25-23.
The under-19 match went to five sets before Ireland came out on top, with setter Mary Creaton's serving particularly impressive.
