Call goes out to find new Dub referees

THE Foundation course for new referees (over-18s) begins on Monday, November 10. It will run for four Mondays at Parnell Park.

Paddy Power and Gay McCabe are the tutors. They were both top footballers.

Gay was a wonderful full-back for the top-notch Thomas Davis team, while the man from Clare was a darting, elusive corner-forward.

He won the Intermediate Championship with Kilmore. He refereed for 28 years. He did inter-county, and Dublin football and hurling finals.

His heroes included Tony Jordan, Noel O'Donoghue, John Bailey and Aidan Shiells, the last man to referee a Dublin county final in Croke Park.

Paddy was fit. He'd be out running at 7am. He loved to share a joke with the players.

He has fond memories of the banter with the Barr boys.

Once he had to send off Mick Bissett. He met him soon after. Mick was thinking of retiring.

Paddy encouraged him to become a referee. He did. He's now one of the best. Dave Feeney likewise. Paddy and his colleagues would like to see more ex-players take up the whistle. They'd be in good company. More info from Aidan Shiells (087-2442764) or Paddy Power (087-2175293).

The Wheel' deal

MEARNóG maestro, Tim Maher, is the inspiration of Wheelchair Hurling.

He reports it is getting more popular by the day. Martin Donnelly has come on board with sponsorship. Next Saturday, IT Sligo will host a big tournament that will attract teams from all over the country.

It's the second such event. "Thankfully, things are progressing very well," says Tim. "More and more people are now playing it. We had a day down in Wexford recently when Lee Chin and some of the other Wexford hurlers came along.

"They all got into the chairs and everybody had great fun. It was generous of them to give their time."

DCB annual mass

THE annual Dublin County Board mass takes place in Parnell Park on Tuesday, November 11th (7.30pm).

It's a nice way to remember old friends. Refreshments at full-time. All welcome.
