Poor old Kate Moss. Every time she opens her mouth in public she gets into trouble.

This time she quite innocently revealed in an interview with Women's Wear Daily that one of her mottos is, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."

Now the stick-thin model is being blamed for encouraging eating disorders. Give me a break.

If a fat person made a comment like that nobody would bat an eyelid. I'd imagine most people would agree with the statement, and furthermore I'd say they would agree with what Kate said next: "You try and remember but it never works."

There's no point getting all politically correct here just because Kate looks good in skinny jeans at 35.

Eating disorders are essentially psychological disorders, and it's unfair to blame a throwaway comment like that for all the world's anorexia woes. It's a bit more complex than that.

Instead of blaming Kate for inspiring girls to stop eating, I propose we celebrate her for helping to combat our obesity epidemic. Are you with me?

Let's face it guys, we're not getting any thinner as a nation.

In fact the Health Service Executive fears the future health of the population is threatened by the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes.

With that in mind I've decided to share my own little motto with you. It's come in handy over the years, especially during those tough post-America months when I returned two stone heavier.

Anybody representing people with eating disorders should look away now. Anybody fighting national obesity read on.

My motto is: Some things are not worth getting fat over.

Okay, it doesn't have the same ring to it as Kate's, but it has prevented me from tucking into cheesy chips and a large Coke at four in the morning.

Bad chocolate is another one -- I'd prefer to leave it out of my digestive system. Bad wine too. White bread is also on the list.

Oinking

As much as I used to love oinking my through a whole loaf, toasted with melting butter, I've now concluded that transitory joy is just not worth getting fat over.

Instead, breakfast is a bowl of porridge with some berries -- well, on good mornings at least ... maybe once a week. All right, all right, once in a blue moon.

At least I know that's what I should be eating for breakfast.

May I just explain here that this motto only applies to your food choices -- I still recommend eating breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

And just so life isn't one big puritanical snorefest I have another motto: Some things ARE worth getting fat over.

Good chocolate, for example, is worth clocking a few pounds for the pleasure.

Suffice to say good wine also fits into this bracket. Garlic potatoes are certainly worth rubbing your tummy for, as are banoffi pie and roasted peanuts.

You see, my mottos provide the perfect balance. I'll never be skin and bones but at least any extra padding will come from a happy place and it might keep me away from that post-nightclub burger.

Striking the right healthy balance is what it's all about and we can't blame Kate Moss if our society has such an unhealthy relationship with food -- on either side of the scales.
